NEDRA Classes, Voltage Divisions and Record Rules

To race in National Electric Drag Racing Association sanctioned competition events or to earn a NEDRA World Record vehicles are categorized by Class and Voltage. Classes are determined by the extent of the vehicle's modification from daily drivers such as simple Street Conversions (SC) to extreme racers like in the Extreme Street (XS) class. Classes are available for both cars and motorcycles. Voltage Divisions begin with 24 volts for division J and step upward to division A5 for over 600.0 volts. Refer to the table, Voltage Divisions, shown below. Please note that the old procedure for deriving voltage division by counting lead acid batteries to determine 'Nominal Voltage' is no longer valid. The only valid method for division determination is by direct voltage measurement. The voltage measurements may be made immediately prior to leaving the pits, in the staging lanes, or at the starting line.

Example:
A car determined to conform to the Pro Street Conversion class [PS] with a battery pack measured to be 237.6 volts would be designated as PS/B.

NEDRA Race Form must be filled out and signed off for each event prior to any record run.

A NEDRA officer or Regional Manager may collect driver membership dues at an event as long as they are collected prior to any runs being made by the driver.

Vehicle owner must be a NEDRA member prior to the submission of any records.

Records must be submitted within 45 days of the date on the record time slip.

Vehicle must meet applicable NEDRA Class and Voltage Specifications.

Vehicle must meet applicable track sanctioning body (NHRA or equivalent) Specifications.

Driver must meet applicable track sanctioning body (NHRA or equivalent) license and rule requirements as required by the event.

Records can be attempted at sanctioned NEDRA events or independently by the vehicle owner at any approved track.

Only a sanctioned NEDRA multi-day event can use time slips spanning multiple days. All other events shall require same day/ same event time slips. Participants in NEDRA multi-day events can potentially earn      multiple records on different days.

3) Rules:

Owner, driver and vehicle must meet all eligibility requirements

Records may be set in any class and voltage division for 1/8 or 1/4 mile distances.

A vehicle may only set one record at each Event.

A valid time slip must not include a driver error (red light).

A record time must include a backup time from the same Event.

If two times are within 1% of each other, the quicker time shall be the record time and the other time shall be the backup time.

If two times differ by more than 1%, the quicker time shall be the backup time and the other time shall be the record time.

4) Record Submission Procedure:

NEDRA Race Form must be properly filled out by the vehicle owner and signed by the track inspector.

Two valid time slips are required.

Send Race Form and copy of the two valid time slips to:

*An Event is considered an NHRA, IHRA "Test and Tune," official competition or NEDRA sanctioned competition that spans a period of a day or weekend. If two separate events are held on the same day, at the same track, a racer can achieve two records for that day if they are made in each "official" event. A tech form will be required for each record made.

Class Descriptions

NEDRA Classes

Each educational institution will be able to compete in ANY class and division they would like to. (Previously there were only two, HS and HS Modified. And weirdly cars and motorcycles and dragsters were all in the same class.) Now there will be two different "certifications" the institute can get. HS for High Schools and High School level trade schools and ED for Educations of higher learning such as colleges and universities and post-highschool college level trade schools.  They can compete in any class or division and if they qualify as such an entity and have the fastest time for HS or ED, they can earn that certification on that record. They may be faster or slower than the non-certificate record.

 PRODUCTION CLASSES
 Street Production (SP)
The Street Production (SP) class is for basic street legal and licensed mass produced vehicles that are originally created to be EVs. An example of a production vehicle would be Tesla's Roadster, not significantly modified for racing.

  Pro-Street Production (PP)
The Pro Street Production (PP) class is for street legal and licensed vehicles that have minor performance or alterations from the original production specs while still maintaining their street appearance and drivability.

 Modified Street Production (MP)
The Pro Modified Street Production (MP) class is street bodied and stock chassied vehicles that have been heavily altered from the original production specs for racing.

 CONVERSION CLASSES

 Street Conversion (SC)
The Street Conversion (SC) class is for basic street legal and licensed conversions that have not been significantly modified for racing.

  Pro-Street Conversion (PS)
The Pro Street Conversion (PS) class is for street legal and licensed conversions that have minor performance alterations for racing while still maintaining their street appearance and drivability.

  Modified Street Conversion (MC)
The Pro Modified Street Conversion (MC) class is for street bodied and chassied vehicles that have been heavily modified for racing.

 DRAG VEHICLE CLASSES

 Extreme Street (XS)
The Extreme Street (XS) class is for full bodied street vehicles that are built as all out race vehicles. These can be custom tube chassis or other highly modified OEM chassis type vehicles. This class does not require vehicles to be licensed for street use but should maintain original OEM street appearance.

 Funny Car/Altered (FC)
The Funny Car/Altered class is for drag race chassis' that are generally door-less fiberglass bodies and include but not limited to funny cars, altered dragsters, T-bucket dragsters, and convertible dragsters. The higher end vehicles are normally single seat SFI spec chassis designs. These may include kits and vehicles that are so altered or stretched they do not fall within the other class rules or do not look like the original OEM body it was based upon.

 Dragsters (DR)
The Rail Dragsters class includes Full-Rail Dragsters, Sand Rails, Formula racers, SFI Spec Junior Comp Dragsters. Includes Front Engine (FED) and Rear Engine (RED) versions.

  MOTORCYCLE CLASSES

It is the intent of the NEDRA Motorcycle class to encompass all two inline wheeled electric vehicles for the purposes of classification for 1⁄4 mile and 1/8 mile ET records into five classes:

 Street Production Motorcycle (SPM)
This class is for street legal production motorcycles, purchased from a manufacturer or distributor, to be raced in direct competition with each other.

 Modified Production Motorcycle (MPM)
This class is for production motorcycles, originally purchased from a manufacturer or distributor, but have been altered or modified from their original design. Motorcycles in this class must be recognizable as originating from the original OEM vehicle but do not have to be street legal.

 Street Conversion Motorcycle (SCM)
This class is for all converted motorcycles that are street legal to compete together for records. ICE conversions can race in this class.

 Modified Conversion Motorcycle (MCM)

This class is for converted motorcycles or ATV’S that have been altered or modified so they are not street legal.

 Drag Motorcycle (DMC)
It is the intent of this class to not limit the appearance of the vehicle or the origin of the frame or components or whether the vehicle is allowed to drive on the street. Any vehicle that cannot fit into one of the previously defined classes will be designated DMC.

 OTHER CLASSES

  Concept Vehicle (CV)
Prototypes and vehicles that are one of a kind and do not fall easily under the other categories. As soon as there are two or more of the vehicle, then it is no longer a concept vehicle.

  High School (HS)
Conversions of street vehicles built and owned by High Schools and High School level trade schools or their sponsors.

 Higher Education (ED)
Street vehicles built and owned byEducations of higher learning such as colleges and universities and post-highschool college level trade schools or their sponsors.

At all events participants must meet the safety and licensing requirements of each event as required by the track and the sanctioning body (NHRA/IHRA/MSA/FIA etc.). For example: at NHRA sanctioned events, a NHRA Competition License is mandatory for cars running 9.99 or quicker (*6.39 for eighth mile) or 135 MPH or faster in the US and Canada.  If you do not know the safety regulations for your track you can usually find them on online. For example, you can obtain a current copy of the NHRA rulebook from the NHRA here: http://store.nhra.com/shop-by-department/membership/
